The tenured professors I work with in the School of the Arts are afraid of losing their privileges and have said they are too scared to stand up to the discrimination. My coworkers have a high threshold for discrimination and they don’t care if VCU refuses to be transparent. -----Forwarded message----- Background I have experienced ongoing discrimination and retaliation by Virginia Commonwealth University, where I was assistant professor of art history. VCU discriminated and retaliated against me after I sought private advice from a doctor about a male colleague’s behavior. VCU professor Colin Lang repeatedly threatened suicide, he threatened to slice my throat, my friend’s throat, shoved me, sent me pictures of his sliced wrists, and threatened me over money he owes me, accused me of stealing money from his bank account, and harassed me over his belongings. He threatened me over my nerve damage from breast cancer treatments. VCU Drs. Bradner and Miller noted the slashes on his arms and told him to obtain help for himself. Lang forwarded me their notes. The doctor put me in touch with the VCU campus police, who contacted the academic staff in the art history department at VCU, not me. VCU wanted Lang to oversee a study program in Berlin, which contributed to the retaliation I have experienced. The temporary elected department chair, Peggy Lindauer, read my emails and fixated on my negative vote for her to be chair when the dean solicited our votes over email. She had earlier promised me retaliation when I participated in a charge against a racist and erratic undergraduate, whom she had defended during a hearing for her expulsion. She obtained non-work related Gmail exchanges from Colin Lang about my private medical fertility forms related to my breast cancer treatments, his suicide attempt, and my personal finances. VCU accepted and distributed these private medical forms without ever asking me about them and without my consent. VCU harassed me about my Gmails. Furthermore, the department chair forced me to sit on a small graduate committee with the male colleague after reading my email. I protested. I experienced more retaliation. Notably, when Ms. Lindauer took steps to terminate my employment, she was motivated by the private e-mail that was sent from my private e-mail account to Mr. Lang’s private e-mail account, concerning the fertility agreement referenced in my November 12, 2014 letter to VCU. I sent the Dean an email clarifying that the Gmails he possessed related to my breast cancer treatments, my personal finances, and Lang’s use of my name for his academic opportunities, but I was fired two days after I told the dean that I had breast cancer. I was denied a grievance hearing by the VCU faculty senate and the ombudsman. A week before my termination, I had just had a positive third year review. VCU had taken over $22,000 from me in course releases and external research grants I had won for a short research sabbatical. Other colleagues said that they did not have to pay as large a portion of their salary as I had, When I complained that my peer was given access to my emails, VCU said that Lindauer was given access to my emails because I made a title IX complaint. I had not and I was not contacted by a title IX officer. I was subjected to anti-Semitic slurs about my “greediness” by VCU. Several colleagues have left VCU recently with complaints of retribution and personal discrimination. Complaint with the VCU Police. my neighbors asked me to contact the VCU campus police because Lang had accused me of removing money from his bank account without telling him. The VCU police told me that only Lang could file a complaint about his accusation. I then said that I was afraid of Lang because a truck he drove veered into me to intimidate me. VCU told me to contact the city police because the alleged incident was outside of its jurisdiction. I declined. However, I received notification a month later that the VCU police interviewed Lang about the driving incident that I had never reported or been questioned about by the police. Lang “advised” the police that he doesn’t drive. However, Lang does have a license. The VCU Police did not fact check Lang’s information. Based on this false statement made by Lang, the police determined I lied. The police interviewed Lang to discredit me about an incident I never reported. The VCU police then informed me that I complained about Lang in a movie theater. I never saw or complained about Lang in movie theater. I asked the police for documentation repeatedly. I have never received explanation. I later learned that a graduate student complained about Lang and the police force confused us or they falsified information. When I asked the police to clarify the false information I received, I was told to file a restraining order against Lang with the city magistrate. However, my male colleague who sent me pictures of his suicide attempt, and who threatened me and harassed me with impunity, was allowed to go to the academic dean. We received disparate treatment. Lang received preferential treatment that allowed him to “mirror” my real fears in the aftermath of his suicide attempt. In August 2015, I filed an internal complaint with the police force of VCU about repeated instances of gender discrimination I experienced by the police. The VCU campus police ignored my complaint, and only acknowledged the receipt of my complaint after I filed again in May 2016. The VCU police refused to answer my numerous requests for updates about the investigation. The police did not review my complaint and dismissed it last week on April 18, 2017 without explanation. The police dismissed my case 15 minutes after I reminded VCU that I had been terminated due to information in a private Gmail exchange that VCU obtained about my reproductive treatments before I underwent chemotherapy for breast cancer. The VCU police discriminated against me based on my disability and gender. NO one oversees the police, and the VCU police can act with impunity.
