ART IN FOCUS

Rockefeller Center | New York, NY

July 6 - October 6, 2026

Presented by Art Production Fund and Rockefeller Center, this Art in Focus exhibition brings Hank Willis Thomas's work into the public spaces of Rockefeller Center, including 45, 30, 50, 10, and 1 Rockefeller Plaza, from July 6 through October 6, 2026. The presentation features richly patterned quilts made from sports jerseys alongside sculpture drawing on athletic imagery and symbolism.

This exhibition extends his ongoing engagement with sports, exploring how baseball, basketball, and soccer intersect with identity, history, and politics. Working in a tradition rooted in African American Southern quilting, Thomas deconstructs and reassembles jerseys into abstract patterns, art-historical references, and silhouettes of celebrated athletes, prompting reflection on the bodies that have worn these uniforms and the visual systems tied to inequality.

Highlights include That's Game (2021), a mural reimagining the NBA logo through All-Star jerseys spanning the league's history; Guernica (2016), a large-scale quilt referencing Picasso's landmark painting; and sculptures from the Punctum series, including Liberty (2015) and Perseverance (2017), installed within vitrines alongside imagery drawn from the New York Knicks to Jackie Robinson's legacy.
